Floater Telescope Operator

NSF NOIRLab is the preeminent U.S. national center for ground-based nighttime optical and infrared astronomy, dedicated to enabling breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics through the development and operation of state-of-the-art observatories, data products, and scientific services. Operating as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), NOIRLab supports multiple programs, including Gemini, Rubin, MSO (CTIO and KPNO), and CSDC, with facilities across Arizona, Chile, and Hawai’i.

We are seeking a Floater Telescope Operator to join the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) operations team in Chile. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the operation of world-class astronomical facilities, including CTIO, Gemini South, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, while supporting cutting-edge scientific research within a collaborative international environment.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to become part of a highly collaborative, international scientific environment and play a direct role in supporting world-class astronomical observations and discoveries. Successful candidates will participate in the operation of the 4-meter V. M. Blanco Telescope at Cerro Tololo and the 4-meter SOAR Telescope at Cerro Pachón, with the possibility of supporting additional telescopes and systems as operational needs and training opportunities allow.

As a member of the CTIO Telescope Operations (TelOps) Team, the Floater Telescope Operator plays a critical role in supporting astronomers and researchers from around the world, ensuring the efficient and safe operation of telescopes, instruments, and associated systems while maximizing scientific productivity and observational success.

This role requires individuals with strong communication and organizational abilities, initiative, technical curiosity, and a willingness to learn and grow in a demanding and rewarding environment. The selected candidates will develop expertise in the principles and operation of large astronomical telescopes, scientific instruments, and observational systems, while contributing to real-time operational and technical decisions that support scientific goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate telescopes, scientific instruments, and computer systems during nighttime and daytime scientific and engineering activities.
• Ensure the safety of personnel, telescopes, instruments, and facilities during operational activities, particularly during nighttime operations.
• Identify, report, and assist in diagnosing and resolving technical issues that may arise during telescope operations.
• Support visiting astronomers, staff scientists, and engineers in the use of telescopes, instruments, and associated systems.
• Participate in scheduled queue observing activities and support planned observation programs.
• Develop working knowledge of instrument configurations and operational procedures to provide backup support when needed.
• Contribute to the continuous and efficient execution of telescope operations and scientific programs.

Please note that this role is focused primarily on operations and technical support. While it does not include dedicated time or funding for personal research activities, opportunities for professional development and role-related training are provided.

Qualifications and Requirements

We are seeking highly motivated professionals who thrive in collaborative and technically challenging environments and who possess:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related scientific field. Extensive and exceptional observational experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.
• Availability and willingness to work night shifts, including weekends and holidays as operational needs require.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Fluency in English is required; Spanish language proficiency is considered an advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, work independently, and show initiative.
• Strong judgment and the ability to make sound decisions, particularly regarding operational and safety-related matters.
• Ability to work effectively within multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
• Familiarity with computer systems and working knowledge of Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems.
• A valid driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to safely operate four-wheel-drive vehicles in mountain environments.

Preferred Experience

Candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

• Telescope operation and/or astronomical observations.
• Hands-on experience with scientific equipment and instrumentation, including electronics, optics, cryogenics, or other complex and sensitive systems.
• Relevant software and technical skills, including Python programming and/or astronomical data reduction.
• A Master’s degree in a related field.

Work Environment

Operations are primarily conducted at observatory facilities located at Cerro Tololo (2,200 meters altitude) and Cerro Pachón (2,750 meters altitude), with additional remote connectivity from La Serena and international institutions. This role requires the ability to work effectively in mountain environments and support observing systems outside regular working hours when needed.
